The brown cloud that hangs over Phoenix on many winter days is made up of several pollutants, including particulate matter. In the Phoenix area, Maricopa County Air Quality Department works to protect us from particulate pollution.

On Tuesday, January 16, Maricopa County launched Bring Back Blue, the official air quality public awareness campaign. The campaign uses TV, radio, and print ads, as well as a website and this monthly email newsletter, to communicate the need for and benefits of cleaning up our air.

Where there's smoke there's pollution

Don't burn wood

Wood burning, both indoors and out, adds to our particulate pollution problem. Not one but two of the Dirty Dozen tips ask you to reduce or eliminate your wood burning:

  1. Reduce fireplace and woodstove use, and don’t use your wood-burning fireplace or stove on no-burn days. (That's really two tips in one!)
  2. Consider using gas instead of wood.
